WHITEHALL, Mich. — A Mears, Mich. man was shot and killed Friday after he charged at a deputy with a box cutter in Whitehall, according to the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to Comfort Inn on West Holton-Whitehall Road for a well-being check at about 4:52 a.m.
According to the caller, who was not on scene, their 37-year-old son was staying at the hotel and they were worried that he may try to harm himself.
Deputies found the man semi-conscious inside his room with multiple self-inflicted injuries, according to Muskegon County Sheriff’s Lt. Austin Aamodt. One deputy then left to get medical supplies from their cruiser while the other stayed with the man.
Outside the hotel, the man charged at the remaining deputy while holding a box cutter, resulting in the deputy shooting the man several times under a carport, Aamodt told News Channel 3.
The 37-year-old was given medical treatment on scene, but died from his injuries, deputies said.
