Seneca Falls, N.Y. (WHAM) — Two false 911 calls about an active shooter at a pair of hotels prompted a large police response in two counties Friday, according to authorities.

Seneca Falls police said a 911 call came in at 7:35 a.m. reporting multiple victims at the Hampton Inn on Balsley Road. The hotel was evacuated while police searched the building and surrounding vehicles.

The false call prompted the Seneca Falls and Waterloo school districts to go on lockout or have a 2-hour delay.

Mosa and Eleanor Boruah, who are staying on the second floor of the hotel, said they heard banging coming from the hallway as they were heading down for breakfast.

“So, right when I looked out through my peephole, the officer turned around and started banging on our door,” Boruah said. “And then when we opened it, the first thing he said was ‘Police! Get out! Go, leave right now!'”

The couple said as they made their way downstairs, they were escorted by officers, along with other hotel guests, to a secure area across the street.

“They kept saying, active shooter, which surprised us;” Boruah said. “We’re from the Los Angeles area.”

Boruah said it took roughly 45 minutes for police to investigate before they were allowed back into their rooms.

“Public safety is probably more important than anything else,” Boruah said. “So, nobody was hurt, no lives were lost. I guess ultimately that’s what really matters.”

Around the same time, Penn Yan police said they received a similar 911 call at the Hampton Inn on Mace Street.

Seneca Falls police said they’re working with colleagues in Yates County to find out who made these false reports.

“My guys are trying to track the number down. We pulled the 911 recordings,” said Seneca Falls Police Chief Tim Snyder. “So, we’re trying to track everything down that we can right now and work with Penn Yan PD.”

“This practice is not only dangerous but also illegal,” Seneca Falls Police Chief Timothy Snyder said in a statement. “Swatting creates unnecessary chaos, diverts emergency resources, and puts innocent people at risk.”

Detectives are working to identify who is responsible, and said charges will be pursued in this case.
