Construction on six new hotels is to begin in Jamaica in the upcoming fiscal year, which starts on April 1.
The developments, when completed, will bring foreign direct investment of US$2.5 billion and 10,000 new jobs.
Further, the developments will add 5,600 rooms to the sector and 1,000 hotel workers housing.
The disclosures were made by Custos of Kingston Steadman Fuller in the annual Throne Speech he delivered on behalf of Governor General Sir Patrick Allen.
Fuller revealed that the Tourism Workers Pension Scheme has now surpassed 10,000 registrations and savings under investment of $4 billion.
Last year, Jamaica welcomed 4.1 million visitors to the island, generating US$4.3 billion in revenues.
“This moves the sector closer to the five by five goal, that is five million visitors and US$5 billion in earnings by 2025,” said Fuller.
