‘Uninhabitable’ Kalamazoo hotel sold to developers for $1.5M

KALAMAZOO, MI — A condemned Super 8 Motel off West Main Street has sold for more than $1.5 million.

The hotel in Oshtemo Township was condemned on June 18. An LLC owned by Portage-based real estate developer Hinman Company and AVB purchased it for $1.5 million in July, according to public records.

Originally listed for $2.3 million, the three-story, 62-room building sold for just over $25,600 per room.

“Due to the condition of the building and the fact that it had been condemned by the local building officials, the building will be razed,” according to a statement from the Hinman Company.

Future plans for the 74,000-square-foot property near West Main Street and U.S. 131 are undetermined at this time, according to Hinman.

Upon inspection by the Oshtemo Fire Department and township ordinance enforcement in June, the hotel was deemed “uninhabitable.”

It was missing 33% of the fire doors, as required by city ordinance, while another 50% were damaged, said Township Supervisor Cheri Bell. The building was also missing 66% of its fire extinguishers and 90% of smoke alarms.

The owners were working on bringing the building up to code in the hopes of reopening, a man at the front desk previously told Kalamazoo Gazette/MLive, but paused efforts as they finalized a sale in July.

The hotel has since been removed from the Wyndham website, and the phone number disconnected.

Now, the building sits empty. Several broken windows overlook the parking lot that was littered with trash, shopping carts and a makeshift tent in June, following the initial closure.

All guests were asked to leave the property by 10 p.m. on June 18. Local advocates for the area’s homeless population could not confirm if the closure had impacted people living there long-term.
