A year after celebrating its bicentennial year, The Shelbourne, Dublin’s Grande Dame, is preparing to embark on the next chapter in its illustrious story. In late October 2025, the iconic five-star hotel will begin an extensive year-long refurbishment of the guestroom offering, designed to preserve its timeless elegance while subtly evolving the experience for a new era.
Commissioned by Archer Hotel Capital B.V. (Archer), owners of The Shelbourne since 2024, the transformation will be led by internationally renowned interior designer Bryan O’Sullivan and his eponymous studio. The project represents an investment in excess of €50 million and will see 226 guestrooms — specifically the Queen, Deluxe, and Heritage Premium categories — undergo a considered and detailed refresh.
Originally opened in 1824, The Shelbourne has long been at the heart of Irish social, political, and cultural life. From its historic role in the drafting of the Irish Constitution to its place as Dublin’s most storied hotel, this landmark building continues to represent the very best in Irish hospitality.
The forthcoming renovation will reflect a classic, traditional luxury aesthetic, with elegant detailing that evokes the era of the hotel’s original construction, complemented by eclectic, playful elements that speak to the vibrant character of modern Dublin. While much of the furniture and lighting will be newly designed by Bryan O’Sullivan Studio, existing pieces will be thoughtfully retained too to ensure continuity and reverence for the past.
As with all BOSS projects, the design will be personal and local in flavour, drawing inspiration from Irish artists and institutions. New custom-designed carpets reference the work of artist Louis le Brocquy, while a collaboration with Dublin’s Kerlin Gallery is being explored to source contemporary Irish artworks, framed with clean simplicity to complement the richness of the interiors.
