JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WCYB) — When classes begin at ETSU next week, thousands of new faces will be on campus but for some students, “campus living” means something a little different for the beginning of their semester.

We have a large demand for student housing on campus with a large freshman class and also quality facilities and great programming, said Mayhew.

Sam Mayhew is the Associate Vice President of Student Life and Enrollment he tells News 5’s Yannia Nordelo that this year ETSU is expecting a record breaking freshman class.

With new students come new demands, which is why he says they’ve been working to update different parts of campus.

You’ll always see renovation on our campus. If you’ve been on our campus the last few years, we’ve definitely been improving our classroom spaces, our living spaces, and also our student centered spaces, said Mayhew.

Right now, the university is at capacity for on-campus housing, which is why Richard Swearingen the Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life, says more than 100 students will have to temporarily live in hotel rooms.

That comes from students who have got their application for housing in a little late, but it allows us to then still offer a move experience for them to get them started on the right foot, said Swearingen.

While at the hotel, students will be provided transportation to and from campus, along with access to all the same resources for those living in residence halls.

I don’t think it will be a hindrance; if anything, it will help them get a stable start to the semester, and some students will use this as a launching pad to find off campus accommodations, said Swearingen.

However, students like Kristina Taylor say there are benefits to living on campus.

Right now, my residence hall that I live in is a two minute walk from my building that all of my classes are in, so it’s so convenient not to have to worry about parking in the middle of the day, said Taylor.

Also sharing tips for those freshmen who will be living off campus.

Get involved with the things that the staff in the hall are facilitating, said Taylor.

University leaders say they hope to move students into residence halls at the end of September, but for now, those hotel rooms are a temporary home for ETSU’s newest Bucs.
