Modern transformation with great attention to historical elements.

Renowned luxury hotel Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is set to undergo an extensive renovation of 175 rooms and suites. Led by award-winning French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, the transformation will honor the hotel’s rich Dutch heritage while preserving its historic heritage and integrating it with contemporary elegance and French flair. The result will be an enhanced guest experience that meets the expectations of modern travelers. The renovation is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.

A historic monument in a new guise: from the 15th century to the future

Nestled between two historic canals in the heart of Amsterdam, The Grand has been a symbol of luxury and refinement for centuries and is deeply rooted in the history of the Netherlands. Originally built as a monastery in the 15th century, the property was first transformed into a royal guest house in the 16th century, later into the headquarters of the Dutch Admiralty and then into Amsterdam City Hall. Over the course of its illustrious history, The Grand has welcomed legendary historical figures including William of Orange and Maria de Medici, both of whom have special suites named after them in tribute to their legacy. Perhaps the most striking detail of The Grand is the Wedding Chamber, created by Chris Lebeau in 1925. The stained glass and Amsterdam School-style furnishings create an intimate atmosphere, which is why the Wedding Chamber continues to serve as a venue for weddings, private parties and cultural gatherings to this day.

The hotel’s transformation is being led by acclaimed design studio PYR – Pierre-Yves Rochon, renowned for its expertise in luxury hospitality interiors. Inspired by The Grand’s rich heritage, the renovation strikes a balance between Dutch heritage elements and modern sophistication with a French twist.

A grand welcome: renovation of arrival and hotel rooms

The renovation makes extensive use of Dutch art, combined with modern luxury and a homely atmosphere. Guests enter the historic courtyard, which pays homage to Dutch biodiversity, with peonies, tulips, hydrangeas and fragrant herbs. The redesigned lobby and central atrium bring the beauty of the garden indoors. The restored white marble floors, oak parquet in the private reception areas and warm mood lighting create an intimate atmosphere.

The hotel’s 175 rooms and suites, including the Legendary Suites and a newly designed Honeymoon Suite, exude heritage and contemporary comfort. Interiors are inspired by Vermeer’s soft blues and yellows, enriched with elements such as aged leather, premium woods and carefully selected artwork. Signature furnishings include the Temple Bed, an alcove furnished with a daybed overlooking the canal, and a bespoke drinks cabinet to celebrate life. Corridors become curated spaces, with custom rugs inspired by Amsterdam’s historic paving stones, antique Delftware vases, French moldings and original artwork by Dutch artists. The floral tribute continues in the Florista Tea & Cocktail Lounge , where guests can enjoy seasonal infusions, high teas and creative cocktails inspired by the floral arrangements found throughout the hotel’s salons and guestrooms.

Sustainable luxury in The Grand: respect for the past, ready for the future

The renovation of The Grand takes sustainability into account and invests in green innovations, such as the insulation of the building, geothermal energy generated on site and a new building management system that enables further steps in energy efficiency. The renovated rooms are designed with environmentally friendly materials, including certified woods and natural textiles. In addition, green elements are used extensively to create a connection between nature and the city. The hotel’s efforts have been recognized by external certifications, including the highest Green Key standard (gold), the silver EarthCheck certification, the EHMA sustainability award from Diversey and the platinum status from Accor.

Expansion of the Sofitel Legend brand

Sofitel Legend is committed to continuously modernizing the brand. The renovation of Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is an example of this, as is the extensive renovation of Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, including the restoration of the historic Heritage Wing in 2024. This ambition is also reflected in the continuous expansion of the brand. For example, three new hotels joined the hotel group in 2024, including Sofitel Legend The Mozart Prague in Europe, Sofitel Legend Pyramids Giza in Egypt and Sofitel Legend Jaipur in India, which means that the Sofitel Legend network will consist of nine exceptional destinations worldwide within three years.

The renovation of The Grand is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
