A local hotelier just brought a new Hyatt brand to market and has plans for another local outpost under the same flag next year.

Shamin Hotels this week opened a Hyatt Select at 13148 Kingston Ave., near the Interstate 295-Route 10 interchange in eastern Chesterfield.

The 121-room hotel was formerly a Hyatt Place and operated under that brand for years. Shamin has owned the hotel since 2020.

Hyatt unveiled the Select brand in February. The Chicago-based firm described the new offering as an “upper-midscale transient brand” and touted the concept as one that “expands Hyatt’s ability to care for travelers seeking shorter stays for business or leisure in secondary and tertiary markets,” according to a news release.

The hotel features a 24-hour, grab-and-go market, where guests can buy food, beer and wine in what’s designed to be a self-serve and convenient dining option for guests. It also offers complimentary breakfast.

The local Select also has a 1,850-square-foot meeting room, a fitness center and a pool, according to Hyatt’s website.

Shamin CEO Neil Amin called the conversion of the Chester hotel a full renovation of the building’s guest rooms and public areas. He said the project cost more than $1.5 million.

Amin said Shamin volunteered to be the first operator to open a Hyatt Select in the U.S., in line with Shamin’s history of being on the forefront. Shamin was the first operator to open a Moxy hotel, a Marriott brand aimed at young travelers, in Virginia. Amin said Shamin also was the first operator nationally to offer a rooftop bar at a Hampton Inn.

“We like to think about the future and be pioneers in the industry,” Amin said. “Being the first one is not easy. A lot of things have to be ironed out. I think they wanted to have someone with some experience first (to open a Select).”

Shamin also has another Richmond-area Hyatt Select in the works with the pending conversion of its Hyatt Place at 4401 S. Laburnum Ave. The property, near Richmond International Airport, is expected to reopen as a Select in March after a renovation set to kick off next month.

Shamin is also working on opening additional hotels in the region.

In December, it plans to open a dual-brand Hampton Inn and Home2 Suites hotel nearing completion at the Interstate 95-Route 10 interchange.

Shamin’s other local projects include a 12-story Marriott hotel on the site of a closed Hardee’s on Arthur Ashe Boulevard, which is going through the permitting process. Also in the works are two hotels at the Virginia Center Commons redevelopment – a Residence Inn is planned to be completed in February and the Home2 Suites is slated to wrap up in the third quarter of 2026.

In Chesterfield, Shamin is planning to begin construction by the end of this year on a pair of hotels planned at the Springline at District 60 development, one being a 270-room Hilton and the other an extended-stay hotel.

Headquartered in Chesterfield, Shamin operates 79 hotels in central Virginia and Hampton Roads as well as in several other states.
