The origins of Il Bottaccio trace back to the late 18th century, when it was originally constructed as a mill by the affluent Paquale Boldrini in the picturesque village of Montignoso. This historic building, which later expanded to include a residence, holds the name “Il Bottaccio,” derived from a traditional Tuscan term referring to a basin used to collect water for mills and olive presses. The mill was an essential part of the local community, providing a crucial resource for the surrounding region’s agricultural activities.

In the 1970s, the property was acquired by Dr. Gaetano Azzolina, a renowned heart surgeon, who meticulously restored it and transformed it into a private home. Azzolina’s restoration maintained the building’s historical charm while integrating modern comforts. It was his efforts that laid the foundation for the property’s evolution into the luxury destination it is today.

In the early 1980s, Il Bottaccio was sold to Elio d’Anna, a multifaceted and visionary musician, philosopher, and entrepreneur. D’Anna brought an eclectic and artistic flair to the property, adding to its allure. Under his stewardship, Il Bottaccio opened its doors as a hotel in 1983. The property’s remarkable history culminated in its entry into the prestigious Relais & Châteaux family in 1988, a recognition of its exceptional quality and dedication to providing an extraordinary guest experience.
