Hilton has opened the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan, marking a new milestone of 888 operating hotels across Greater China and Mongolia, as the group accelerates plans to double its regional presence in the coming years.

The hospitality giant opened its first property in mainland China in 1988 and has expanded its room inventory nearly tenfold over the past 12 years.

Alan Watts, president, Asia Pacific, Hilton, said, “Reaching 888 hotels in China is a powerful symbol of Hilton’s deep-rooted commitment to this dynamic market. China continues to be a key part of our long-term growth strategy as demand for travel and experiences continues to rise.”

Located in Shanghai’s Qiantan District, on the southern stretch of Shanghai’s new Bund, the new Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan features 204 rooms and suites starting from 52 sqm, each offering river views and private balconies. Dining highlights include Mediterranean-inspired Arame, refined Min cuisine at Fu Cheng by Michelin-starred chef Justin Yang, and Starlight Room, a chef’s table concept with an open kitchen and terrace.

With the opening of Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan, Shanghai now joins Dubai and Doha as the third city globally to host two Waldorf Astoria properties, alongside the existing Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund.

“The presence of these two grand luxury icons in Shanghai is a powerful signal of the depth and breadth of opportunities in China’s hospitality landscape,” said Qian Jin, president, Greater China and Mongolia, Hilton.

Over the past 15 years, Waldorf Astoria has built a portfolio of five hotels across the country – Shanghai on the Bund, Beijing, Chengdu, Xiamen, and now Shanghai
Qiantan.

Hilton recently announced several key new signings in the luxury and lifestyle segments, as part of its plans to exceed 100 luxury and lifestyle hotels across Greater China in the coming years.

New signings including Waldorf Astoria Shenzhen (2028), LXR Hotels & Resorts Tianjin (2029), Conrad Zhoushan (2028), and two Curio Collection by Hilton hotels in Quanzhou (2026) and Shanghai Yuqiao (2026).
