Aria Hotels expands into Dominican Republic with historic boutique property

Aria Hotels, the hospitality subsidiary of Greece’s Libra Group, has announced its expansion into the Dominican Republic with the launch of Aria Santa Maria, a nine-room boutique hotel in Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone.

The move marks the company’s second international destination following its recent entry into Colombia. The hotel, named after Christopher Columbus’ flagship vessel, reflects Aria Hotels’ broader push into Latin America.

The property occupies a historic building constructed between 1515 and 1523 by García de Aguilar, a notable figure in early Hispaniola. Originally designed by Luis de Moya – architect of the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor, the oldest cathedral in the Americas – the structure gained a second floor in the 18th century using rubble from the 1615 earthquake.

Aria Hotels plans to restore the building with an emphasis on preserving its architectural and colonial heritage.

Maria Fernanda Correa, the company’s representative in Latin America, announced the expansion at a Greek Embassy event marking 68 years of diplomatic ties between Greece and the Dominican Republic. Attendees included Dominican First Lady Raquel Arbaje.

“With deep roots in Greece and a growing international presence, we firmly believe in meaningful hospitality – one that honors local traditions while reflecting the warmth and generosity that define Greek culture,” Correa said.

“We are thrilled to expand into the Dominican Republic, a country with an extraordinary cultural heritage that resonates deeply with our values. Our commitment is to celebrate and preserve the stories of this beautiful country while sharing our own.”
