As Group Director of Engineering and Sustainability at London and Regional (L+R) Hotels, Angelo Noto leads a pioneering strategy that is reshaping how one of the world’s largest privately owned hotel portfolios addresses the challenges of climate change, operational efficiency, and guest experience.
Born and raised in Italy, Angelo moved to the United Kingdom in 2012, bringing with him a deep-rooted passion for technical innovation and a strong sense of responsibility. Now settled in the UK with his family, Angelo is not only a leader in his field but also a proud husband and father. “I’m married and proud to be the father of a beautiful 5-year-old girl,” he shares, reflecting the personal values that underpin his professional mission.
Angelo’s journey began at the Italian Industrial Technical Institute, where he specialised in Mechanical Engineering. His education was further enriched by time spent in a military academy, which instilled in him discipline and a strategic mindset.
Over the years, he has continued to build on this foundation with targeted qualifications in Facilities Management, Property Management and energy management, as well as certifications in hospitality management. This blend of technical skill and business acumen has been key to his success in the complex world of hotel operations.
Driving sustainability at L+R Hotels
At L+R Hotels, Angelo oversees a portfolio that spans 115 hotels and 22,166 rooms across the UK, Continental Europe, the US and the Caribbean. The company’s real estate assets exceed £10bn(US$13.3bn), and its properties range from select-service hotels to award-winning five-star resorts. This scale brings both complexity and opportunity, particularly as L+R increasingly brings more hotels under direct management. “This not only enhances operational control but also gives us greater influence in embedding sustainability into our long-term planning and day-to-day operations,” Angelo explains.
Central to Angelo’s role is the development and execution of L+R’s sustainability strategy. He describes it as “rooted in a deep understanding of how energy is consumed across our portfolio.” By analysing energy usage at the property level, Angelo and his team can identify inefficiencies and take targeted action to reduce carbon emissions.
“A core element of our approach is setting clear, measurable targets that are embedded across the organisation,” he says. For Angelo, sustainability is not a top-down directive but a “shared responsibility”, driven by a gradual cultural shift that empowers every team member to contribute.
One of Angelo’s key innovations has been the appointment of Sustainability Champions at each property. These individuals act as local advocates, embedding sustainable thinking into daily operations and ensuring that environmental responsibility becomes a consistent part of L+R’s culture. A dedicated Sustainability Committee, which brings together stakeholders from across the business, further supports this approach by aligning strategic goals, monitoring progress and sharing best practices.
